چکیده

Background and Objective: Binaural interaction component has been seen to be effective in assessing the binaural interaction process in normal hearing individuals. However, there is a lack of literature regarding the effects of SNHL on the Binaural Interaction Component of ABR. Hence, it is necessary to study binaural interaction occurs at the brainstem when there is an associated hearing impairment. Methods: Three groups of participants in the age range of 30 to 55 years were taken for study i.e. one control group and two experimental groups (symmetrical and asymmetrical hearing loss). The binaural interaction component was determined by subtracting the binaurally evoked auditory potentials from the sum of the monaural auditory evoked potentials: BIC= [{left monaural + right monaural)-binaural}. The latency and amplitude of V peak was estimated for click evoked ABR for monaural and binaural recordings. Results: One way ANOVA revealed a significant difference for binaural interaction component in terms of latency between different groups. One-way ANOVA also showed no significant difference seen between the three different groups in terms of amplitude. Conclusion: The binaural interaction component of auditory brainstem response can be used to evaluate the binaural interaction in symmetrical and asymmetrical hearing loss. This will be helpful to circumvent the effect of peripheral hearing loss in binaural processing of the auditory system. Additionally the test does not require any behavioral cooperation from the client, hence can be administered easily.

Behavioral and electrophysiologic binaural processing in persons with symmetric hearing loss.

BACKGROUND Binaural hearing improves our ability to understand speech and to localize sounds. Hearing loss can interfere with binaural cues, and despite the success of amplification, ∼25% of people with bilateral hearing loss fit with two hearing aids choose to wear only one (e.g., Brooks and Bulmer, 1981). One explanation is reduced binaural processing, which occurs when the signal presented t...

Binaural Interaction Component in Speech Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses.

OBJECTIVE This article aims to describe the characteristics of the binaural interaction component (BIC) of speech-evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR). MATERIALS AND METHODS All 15 subjects had normal peripheral hearing sensitivity. ABRs were elicited by speech stimulus /da/. RESULTS The first BIC (BIC-SP1) in the speech-evoked ABR occurred at around 6 ms in the region of peak V. The se...

Spatial release from masking in children with normal hearing and with bilateral cochlear implants: effect of interferer asymmetry.

Spatial release from masking (SRM) was measured in groups of children with bilateral cochlear implants (BiCIs, average ages 6.0 and 7.9 yr) and with normal hearing (NH, average ages 5.0 and 7.8 yr). Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were measured for target speech in front (0°), and interferers in front, distributed asymmetrically toward the right (+90°/+90°) or distributed symmetrically towar...

Monaural/binaural preferences: effect of hearing aid circuit on speech intelligibility and sound quality.

This investigation compared monaural and binaural hearing aid preferences of 15 adults with mild-to-moderately-severe bilaterally symmetrical sensorineural hearing losses. Subjects listened to connected discourse in quiet and background noise at 70 and 80 dB SPL with K-Amp, linear Class D, linear output limiting compression (OLC), Manhattan II, and linear asymmetrical peak clipping circuits (AP...

بررسی تأثیر اوتیت میانی مزمن بر پردازش مرکزی شنوایی کودکان

Introduction & Objective: Conductive hearing loss following otitis media (OM) attenuates and delays sound passing through the middle ear. This may impair central auditory functions (such as binaural hearing) and lead to central impairments that persist after the peripheral loss has resolved. This study investigated the effects of chronic otitis media (COM) on central auditory function in chil...
